Artist statement:
During the time I was pursuing my Communications and Visual Art degree, I witnessed the changes within the photographic world with new computer technology in the late 80's and 90's. The once commanding darkroom was being integrated by the newest computer lab. I both embraced and questioned the digital world photography was being assimilated into.
As I delved further into the basic concepts of photography; where it came from, what it meant, and where it was going. By looking critically and freshly at a well-known medium, I integrated infrared photography and current trend in cyanotype printing.
This opened a creative outlet in art. Exploring and capturing light through formal and conceptual studies, I challenge traditional understanding of what a photograph is and how one is made. I emphasize process in art making, constructing conceptual reference to the medium itself. Combing cutting edge technology with the most historic of processes, I push the bounds of conventional photography to invoke fresh alternatives to creating and appreciating art.
Bio:
Amy was born in Atlanta but mostly raised in East Tennessee area. She is of Scottish and Italian descent who grew up in a small unincorporated town called Midtown, tucked between Harriman and Kingston, southwest of Knoxville. She currently lives in the Greater Memphis Area with her husband Terry. When they first moved to Memphis, she lived in Midtown, oddly enough. There is a huge contrast between the two Midtowns. One a constant lively party, the other quiet, ‘tight-knit’ working class community.
She received a BA in Communications from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she concentrated on visual arts and photography. She was active in many university activities: WUTC 88.1 fundraising events, Student Orientation Board, Sigma Kappa and the College Access Program for students with physical and learning disabilities. She served on the board of the Smoky Mountain Professional Photographers, Currently East Tennessee Professional Photographers in Knoxville. Some of her wedding photography has appeared in local and regional publications such as Premier Bride and I Do for Brides magazine.
She has worn many hats through the years: darkroom manager, retail photo-finisher, sales, custom album designer, digital retouch artist, event photographer and a phlebotomist. Yes, a certified vampire for Covenant Health in Knoxville TN.
Over 20 years of  photography experience ranging from people, travels and alternative photography .
